End users should never be discouraged from saving what they're working on to avoid data loss. The way that the "Update" button closes the record your working on discourages users from saving because they have to go back in to the record to continue working on it. (Getting back to the record can be cumbersome as well because of the way the lists display.) But workstations crash, browser applications close unexpected and what you're working on will likely be lost. When I worked in Support I used to use the line, "Save as often as it is important for you not to have re-create your work." But if we make saving inconvenient, the customer will avoid doing it.
